Introduction to modelling in Excel

What is covered?

The aim of the course is to revise and extend participants’ knowledge of Excel and give them a practical insight into building a robust equity valuation model using best practice.  It will cover “what-if” scenarios using Excel data tables, pivot tables, dynamic charting and macros.
The course will be highly practical, with tutor inputs interspersed with practical exercises, and a focus on real-world application.

Who will benefit?

Participants starting out in using Excel for modelling company cash flows and valuation.  This course is designed to be instantly applicable back at the workplace.  Prior knowledge of the basics of DCF and company valuation is required.

Course content

  • State the principles of modelling best practice
  • Describe the key features of Excel that can be used to ensure modelling best practice
  • Outline the structure of an enterprise financial models for a real businesses
  • Model sensitivities and “what-if” scenarios using Excel’s data table and scenario manager tools
  • Audit a model using Excel’s formula auditing tools
  • Create and use PivotTables to analyse data
  • Understand how to deal with large data sets in Excel 2010 and later versions
  • Revise key Excel keyboard shortcuts
  • Create dynamic charts that automatically update when new data is added, and can interact with the source data
  • Create dynamic hyperlinks for navigation, with references that update automatically in real time
  • Develop macros to automate common functions
  • Show how Bloomberg’s excel add-in can be used to create complex analytics that can be updated in real-time
