Ockendon strategy and leadership courses are a unique blend of the theory and practice of successful business management. We aim to create strong leaders with increased confidence in their own skills and judgement. We use a variety of techniques - including presentations, case studies, role-plays, forum theatre and simulations - to increase the power of the learning environment and improve participant’s understanding and retention of the material. Above all, our training is tailored to fit the needs of your executives and the internal and external challenges faced by your organisation. We work with a wide variety of clients internationally, from medium sized firms to global multi-nationals, and with participants ranging from new graduates to board-level directors.
We believe that tailoring is more cost efficient than a 'one course fits all' approach. We will meet you to understand the business problems that your organisation faces and then suggest different design options to meet your training needs. We will work with you to create a detailed programme structure and develop the tailored course materials, including any distance learning or e-learning elements.
We have a very experienced and efficient programme design team, and can quickly produce high quality, engaging training materials. We have particular expertise in breaking down complex ideas and processes and explaining them in clear and simple steps. We tailor our training materials to reflect our clients' own processes and documentation, making it easier for participants to apply the learning back in the workplace.
We recognise that people prefer to learn in different ways and so we use a variety of different training techniques including:
• interactive workshops
• short tutor presentations
• participant presentations and discussions
• practice exercises and case studies
• e-learning modules
• role-plays and forum theatre
• simulations
We have a variety of simulations, ranging from short computer-based simulations, to complex activity based whole enterprise business simulations. These provide a realistic model environment in which participants work under pressure, explore their leadership styles, and can get a very clear and practical insight into the linkages between the business levers that they control, the strategic and tactical operational decisions that they make, and the human, commercial and financial outcomes.
Our programmes can be delivered to all levels of management, from junior hires to senior managers. Our Strategy & Leadership training typically lasts between one and three days and can cover one or more of the following areas:
Thanks so much for all your input - you got some fantastic feedback comments L&D director, Major Law Firm
Illustrative module outlines
Course outlines for guidance:A major international law firm wanted to launch a global leadership programme for their senior decision makers. They wanted to use an approach that would work with diverse international audiences, but be sensitive to the firm’s traditions and culture. They approached OTC to help with the programme delivery, facilitation and follow up coaching.
OTC, working closely with the client and Hay Group, helped to deliver an introductory programme, followed by a facilitated global launch event in Italy. This was followed by a series of practical workshops and then one-to-one feedback sessions with partners.
The programme was very well received. A sometimes sceptical audience was able to buy into the overall framework, and found the practical insights and feedback very helpful. The client invited OTC to participate in on-going executive coaching for partners, to help them consolidate the learning.
A major law firm wanted to create a development centre for its global senior associate population. They wanted to ensure a safe learning environment in which participants could gain a strategic view of their firm, reflect on their career options, get practical skills development opportunities, and get intensive, focussed feedback on their style and personal impact. They approached OTC to help with the design, development and delivery of the programme.
OTC, working closely with the client helped to design and develop a fully tailored and co-delivered programme, incorporating contributions from the firm’s most senior decision makers.
The programme has been rolled out globally to their senior associate population and has been universally positively acclaimed. It has provided a chance for participants to reflect in a very clear and structured way on the opportunities available to them, and has contributed to improving both employees’ commitment to the firm as well as their commercial performance.
A major Government Department wanted to include a practical, experiential learning element to its flagship middle manager leadership development programme, using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. They wanted to use an approach that was not only engaging and informative, but also directly practical and sensitive to the culture of the organisation. They approached OTC to design and run an experiential learning element based that would allow team/one-to-one facilitation using MBTI.
OTC worked closely with the client, and other learning partners, to build one of our activity based business simulations into the programme. Although an abstraction of reality for a Government Department, the business simulation provided highly realistic examples of the strategic and operational challenges of running a complicated organisation, and the need to communicate and coordinate effectively to ensure efficient operation.
The client was very pleased, as the programme was very well received. The quality of the individual and team feedback was greatly enhanced by the simulation. Participants recognised that their behaviours, when they were under pressure, were “what they were really like”. The feedback and facilitation from the coaches provided them a valuable insight into ways in which they might better manage similar pressures at work.
The business simulation was very intense, but a lot of fun, and really helped in understanding how to work in groups in high pressure situations.
This has been the best learning experience in my life. It was excellent
Excellent opportunity for me to learn the importance of team dynamics in achieving success as a team.
The tutor was fantastic, engaging and interesting. Brought enough examples in to keep things interesting and relevant.
It was very fast paced and challenging, and also reflected real world problems and solutions. I would recommend this for future ITPs..
Really enjoyed the business simulation, gave me a great overview of what it is like to run a business and the necessary relationships and communication that is needed.
